Tesla’s self-driving system may be stopped in Europe due to a Swedish protest over the risks of speeding, Reuters reports.
According to a letter to the EU’s vehicle committee that the news agency has seen recommends The Swedish Transport Administration that the EU says no to a broad launch of Tesla’s “Full self-driving” (FSD) system, unless the ability to drive over speed limits is removed.
Elon Musk-owned Tesla’s system allows drivers to set a so-called “speed offset”, which allows the car to drive faster than the posted speed. The Swedish Transport Administration warns that the function can undermine both traffic legislation and the safety benefits of automated driving. Several Nordic countries, including Finland and Norway, have also expressed concern about the system.
The Swedish Transport Administration demands in the letter that the function be removed. “If this does not happen, the Swedish Transport Administration recommends that the Vehicle Committee in the EU vote against the proposed introduction,” it says, according to Reuters.
The issue is to be discussed in the EU’s vehicle committee on June 30 ahead of an upcoming vote on an EU approval.
