Gha(l)na the joy tonight.

It seemed to end goalless.

Then Ghana decided in the 95th minute.

Caleb Yirenkyi, 20, became a big hero.

Panama held tight and looked to be heading for the country’s first ever WC points.

Then a cold shower came instead in the 95th minute.

Ghana countered and midfielder Yirenkyi poked the ball into the goal – leading to huge cheers.

“Fought like a warrior”

Panama then had a great opportunity to equalize in the ninth additional minute, but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare managed to save Ismael Diaz’s header.

Ghana won 1–0 and Yirenkyi, who lives in Danish Nordsjælland, became a big hero.

– We had to suffer at first, we fought like warriors. We managed to win the match with our common sense, says Ghana national team captain Carlos Queiroz after the match.

Swedish judging trio

The match also had Swedish participation.

The judging team consisting of the main judge Glenn Nyberg and his assistant judges Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderkvist acted as referees.

In the next group stage, Ghana will face England while Panama will face Croatia.

Glenn Nyberg made his WC debut last night.
