US President Donald Trump said on Monday that a memorandum of understanding had been signed with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz had been opened “partially,” adding that the Strait would be fully opened next Friday following the agreement signing ceremony.
Trump added, after his arrival in the French city of Evian to attend the G7 summit, that Iran had agreed not to possess a nuclear weapon, and that was the essence of the dispute.
The US President confirmed that his Vice President, J.D. Vance, will attend the signing ceremony next Friday, indicating that he would like to publish the text of the memorandum of understanding with Iran, “because it is an important and strong document, and we will publish it soon.”
Trump said that easing sanctions on Iran “will depend on its behavior,” adding that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened without fees and completely “after the mines are removed.”
In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Monday that the memorandum of understanding is a very important step and will allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron added, during a press conference with Trump, that “the French army is ready to help in the Strait of Hormuz if America wishes to accept the offer.”
Electronic signature
For his part, Vance confirmed earlier Monday that the agreement with Iran was signed electronically by all parties, and there will be a signing ceremony next Friday.
The US Vice President said that the US administration intends to publish the full text of the agreement to stop the war in Iran this week, adding: “We want the American people to see it.”
“Sometimes, these agreements include some diplomatic protocols and some technical things that need to be worked out, but we plan to release the full text this week,” Vance added in an interview with CBS Mornings.
Vance said that there are some false reports about what was stated in the agreement, noting that the agreement in general “ensures that Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon, while opening the Strait of Hormuz at the same time.”
Vance stated that this “extends a helping hand to Iran and says: Look, if you are willing to fulfill your commitments, if you are willing to allow real inspections of your nuclear program, we will welcome you back into the global economy.”
The US Vice President said that Iran will have “a better and more prosperous future if it fulfills its obligations contained in this agreement,” noting that lifting the freeze on Iranian financial assets “is one of the matters that we will work to resolve in the technical talks that will follow the official signing on Friday.”
Vance denied that the Iranian regime would obtain $24 billion in frozen funds if it met specific criteria, saying that this number “is not mentioned in any of the texts.”
Vance added: “What we said is that we are ready to negotiate the lifting of the asset freeze, but what is much more important is the lifting of sanctions on their economy, provided that they adhere to their long-term commitments regarding the nuclear program.”
