Argentina is the reigning world champion and there are many Argentinians who want to travel north to see the national team play the World Cup in 2026. But not everyone can.
Parents who do not pay child support are being stopped from attending matches, reports say Mundo Deportivo referring to Argentina’s La Nación.
The Argentine government has handed over a list of 13,000 parents who have failed to pay child support to US authorities. These must be stopped if they try to enter the WC arenas.
Has strong support
A similar football ban was introduced in Argentina as early as March 2025. The identity checks have since stopped 162 parents from entering the country’s football stadiums.
The measure – which is called “Tribuna Segura” – has received strong support from Argentine society, reports AS. The newspaper writes that many Argentine mothers have reported the fathers of their children in recent years.
– Anyone who does not fulfill such a basic obligation as providing for their children will have to face the consequences, says Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri, who was previously the chairman of the football club Boca Juniors.
It is not yet too late to pay the debts of football-hungry Argentine parents. The World Cup opener against Algeria will not be played until June 17.
