Cape Verde continues to shine in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Uruguay offered two goals.
Uruguay have won World Cup gold twice, but did not look like a champion team on this night. The match against Cape Verde at Miami Stadium ended 2–2.
Uruguay turned around and took the lead 2–1 at the end of the first half, but the team also made two “junior mistakes” which led to another drop of points.
With Cape Verde making it 1–0, Kevin Pina fired a free kick straight through Uruguay’s set-up wall. Federico Viñas and Maximiliano Araújo jumped in different directions and the ball went into the goal behind them.
When Cape Verde equalized at 2-2, it was Uruguay’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Fernando Muslera who passed out completely. Muslera celebrated 18 World Cup appearances (most of all time in Uruguay) by bullrushing on a loose ball outside the penalty area. The only problem was that Muslera was far too slow and that Hélio Varela lifted the ball into Uruguay’s empty goal.
Uruguay badly out
Uruguay is one of several South American nations living dangerously in the hunt for the round of 16.
Both Uruguay and Cape Verde have two points after two games and will need at least one more point to have a realistic chance of progressing.
Cape Verde has significantly easier opposition (Saudi Arabia) than Uruguay has (Spain).
