Despite his acknowledgment of the abundance of talent in the ranks of the England national team, Alan Shearer, the former captain of the Three Lions, does not see that the road to the 2026 World Cup title is paved with roses. Shearer, who led England in the 1998 World Cup, told reporters, “I think that with the talent we have, success, in my opinion, is winning the title. But when you think about who you will face, such as Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina and perhaps Portugal, I see that as you progress in the tournament, you will find better teams than England.”
Kane and the defense…the key to the English dream
He explained that England’s hopes will depend on the strength of the defense and the level of captain Harry Kane.
He said about the Bayern Munich striker, who topped the German League’s top scorers list for the third consecutive season with 36 goals, “If we defend very well and Harry can do what he is used to, we will have a real chance to win the title. If we want to go far, Harry must be at the top of his game.”
“When you go back to (the 1994 World Cup in the United States), you used to see the players suffering from extreme heat,” he said, referring to increased awareness of player safety, including breaks for drinking water and increasing the number of players in the participating teams and the number of substitutions.
“I don’t expect Harry Kane to play every minute of every match. If England wins comfortably, I don’t think our coach will care about Harry scoring 3 goals, but rather take him off the field and try to keep him for the next match.”
Tuchel is on probation
He also urged Shearer to be patient with coach Thomas Tuchel, saying that he must be allowed to shape the team in his own way and make important decisions, even if they do not win the support of the fans.
“He may have left out some of the best players, but in terms of team chemistry he felt it was better to rely on the players he selected. He should be allowed to do that,” Shearer added.
He pointed to the controversy surrounding Paul Gascoigne’s exclusion from the 1998 squad as an example of how squad discussions dominate the pre-season while stressing that performance on the field remains the most important.
Team management will also be crucial, especially with temperatures expected to rise significantly.
In response to a question about the impact of the English Premier League season, Shearer said, “It may not help,” and cited the number and intensity of matches as well as the climatic differences in the World Cup.
However, he added that England’s recent experience of reaching the top stages of major tournaments, including finishing second behind 2024 European champions Spain, could be helpful.
Although he admitted that the pressure and intensity of matches in England may have an impact on the players’ readiness, he stressed that the strength of the English Premier League and its global influence will keep it strongly present in the tournament. “We are lucky because we have the best league in the world here, which is the English Premier League,” he said.
