British actor Anthony Head has died at the age of 72 due to complications resulting from pneumonia, according to what his family announced, ending an artistic career that spanned more than 4 decades between theatre, television and cinema.
His daughters, actresses Emily and Daisy Head, said that their father “passed away peacefully surrounded by his family members,” stressing that his artistic and humanitarian influence will remain present among his fans and colleagues and in the works in which he participated over many years.

A career that spanned 4 decades
Head was born in the Camden district of London, and began his artistic career on stage, where he participated in several classic works, including Henry V and Lady Windermere’s Fan, before achieving a remarkable presence in West End theaters through his performance as Frank-N-Furter in the 1990 version of the famous show The Rocky Horror Show.
But his international fame came in the late 1990s through his portrayal of Rupert Giles in the American series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where he played the role of mentor and protector of the heroine played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
This role became one of his most famous and influential roles, and established his status among television audiences around the world. Head later participated in a large number of television and film works, including Little Britain, Merlin, Doctor Who, Silent Witness, and Motherland, in addition to films such as The Iron Lady and The Inbetweeners Movie.
In recent years, he has received wide acclaim from a new generation of viewers through his role as businessman and former football club owner Robert Mannion in the award-winning comedy series Ted Lasso, where he appeared alongside Jason Sudeikis.
Before his international success in drama, the British public knew him during the 1980s as the face of the famous “Gold Blend” coffee commercial series, which brought him together with actress Sharon Maughan in a short romantic story that turned into a popular phenomenon between 1987 and 1993.
Head also maintained his stage presence throughout his career, participating in numerous musical shows, including Godspell and Chess, and in 2018 he joined the cast of the long-running radio series The Archers.
His last prominent appearance on screen was in the second season of the series Bridgerton in 2022.
His death comes a few months after the passing of his long-term partner Sarah Fisher in December 2025 at the age of 61. He leaves behind his two daughters, Emily and Daisy, who continued to work in the field of acting, in addition to a vast artistic legacy that made him one of the most prominent British faces who succeeded in combining theater, television, and cinema over the decades.
