Hill: This is how Ukraine turned the tide of the battle against Russia policy

An analytical reading of field developments in the Russian-Ukrainian war, on the American Hill website, indicates an important shift in the balance of power within the battlefield, as Ukraine began to regain the initiative after years of military stagnation that has characterized the front since late 2023.

The site explained – in a report written by Eileen Mitchell – that the war, according to estimates by military analysts, has entered a new phase characterized by a relative decline in Russia’s ability to advance on the ground, compared to a clear rise in the effectiveness of Ukrainian methods, especially in the field of warfare with drones.

Drones stand out as the most influential factor in this transformation, as Ukrainian forces were able to use them to expand the targeting range around the front lines in what is known as the “kill zone,” which made Russian military movements more expensive and complex, and weakened Russia’s ability to mobilize the forces and armor necessary to achieve major breakthroughs.

Analysts pointed out that this development contributed to breaking the state of local war that had prevailed for a long time, in which the battle lines were almost fixed without fundamental changes, which made Ukraine achieve limited but continuing regional gains, according to field reports, at a time when Kiev asserts that the coming months may be decisive in determining the direction of the war.

The Lava Unmanned Systems Regiment, part of the 2nd Khartiia Corps of the Ukrainian National Guard, is a specialized unit focused on combat operations using drones and robotic systems, including deep reconnaissance and precision strikes behind enemy lines. Originally formed as a battalion in 2025, the unit was expanded into a regiment in 2026 as Ukraine increasingly relied on unmanned technologies in warfare. (Photo by Diego Fedele/Getty Images)

turning point

Experts attribute this change to a series of operations carried out by Ukraine over the past months, targeting Russian radar, air defense and electronic warfare systems, which weakened Moscow’s ability to monitor air attacks and deal with them effectively.

This technical superiority also contributed – according to Hill – to enabling Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes inside the Russian interior, targeting oil and military facilities and aircraft maintenance centers, which had a negative impact on Russia’s economic and military structure.

Despite the Russian escalation, some Western military leaders believe that Moscow is facing an increasing depletion in manpower and offensive capabilities, with estimates indicating large human losses since the beginning of the war.

In this context, many Ukrainian cities consider that what has been achieved in recovering lands during the current year represents a turning point that may be invested politically and militarily in any future negotiations, although the diplomatic path is still faltering so far.

Window of opportunity

On the other hand, fears remain that Russia may resort to greater waves of escalation if it continues to lose field control, especially with its increasing reliance on intense air strikes, which included the capital, Kiev, and other cities during the recent period, causing significant human and material losses.

On the political level, Ukrainian calls are increasing for the Western allies, led by the United States, to provide more air defense systems and ammunition, especially in light of what Kiev considers a decisive stage that may determine the future of the war.

However, Washington stresses that any final settlement will not come through a military solution alone, but rather through political negotiations, despite its acknowledgment of the weak progress in the negotiation process during the recent period.

The coming months are likely to be decisive, not only in determining the lines of field control, but also in shaping the features of any possible political settlement to the conflict

A number of military analysts conclude that what is currently happening represents a “window of opportunity” for Ukraine that may not last long, because its ability to exploit its current superiority in drones and modern tactics may be time-limited.

Therefore, the coming months are likely to be decisive, not only in determining the lines of field control, but also in shaping the features of any possible political settlement to the conflict that has been going on for more than 4 years.
