The Sudanese army said on Monday that it had extended its control over two areas in Blue Nile State, southeast of the country, while military sources reported that the elite forces of the Sudanese Intelligence Service met with the joint forces of the Darfur movements – supporting the army – in the city of Dilling in South Kordofan.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent said that the Sudanese army and the forces supporting it were able to regain the “Kern Karn” and “Dokan” areas in Blue Nile State, following violent clashes and battles that took place for hours on Monday morning against the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North allied with them.
He stated that the map of military control has changed several times in this region during the past few weeks, noting that the Sudanese army is waging fierce battles in the south of the Blue Nile in order to reach the city of Kurmuk, located between Sudan and Ethiopia, which is controlled by the Rapid Support Forces.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent also reported that the Sudanese army and the forces supporting it regained the strategic area of Al-Takma, east of the city of Dilling, the second largest city in South Kordofan, after violent battles with the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.

Battles of the Blue Nile
The Sudanese army explained – in a statement – that the forces of the 4th Infantry Division and the supporting forces took control of the “Kern Karn” and “Dokan” areas in Blue Nile State, and “inflicted losses on the Rapid Support Forces in lives and equipment,” while there was no immediate comment from the Rapid Support Forces.
The statement added that these developments come in the context of military operations carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces through the 4th Infantry Division and its units, to enhance security and stability in the region.
Last Friday, the Sudanese army announced its control of the Khor Hassan area in Blue Nile State. This area is considered strategic because it brings the army closer to regaining control over the city of Kurmuk, which is close to the Ethiopian border, as they are separated by about 30 kilometers.
The Sudanese army controls large parts of Blue Nile State, while the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North has been fighting the government since 2011, to demand autonomy in the states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
In a related context, the International Organization for Migration announced the displacement of 3,860 people from the Kurmuk region of Blue Nile State, against the backdrop of battles in the area located near the border with Ethiopia.
Military coordination
In a related development, military sources told Al Jazeera Mubasher that the elite forces of the Sudanese intelligence service met with the joint forces of the Darfur movements supporting the Sudanese army in the city of Dilling, the second major city in South Kordofan.
The sources added that the joint force of the Darfur movements arrived in the city of Dilling after clashes with the Rapid Support Forces and the Popular Movement forces, stressing that the meeting of the Elite Brigade forces and the joint force “would strengthen the army’s control and end the Rapid Support’s attempts to besiege Dilling.”
