The European Football Association (UEFA) has refused to impose water breaks in next season’s Champions League, after opponents said that these breaks in the World Cup affect the pace of matches and are used by coaches to make tactical adjustments.
FIFA decided that all World Cup matches in North America must include water breaks in the middle of the first and second halves, due to high temperatures and concerns about player safety.

But these pauses also occur in indoor, air-conditioned stadiums, prompting many analysts to say that they are partly intended to give TV channels additional time to broadcast advertisements.

UEFA told the ARD network on Wednesday that water breaks in the Champions League will only occur when there are very high temperatures.
The President of the English Football Association, Mark Bullingham, had already ridiculed the idea of implementing these breaks in the Euro 2028 tournament, which will be held in the British Isles, due to the nature of the weather, which is known for its coldness and frequent rain.
The German League (Bundesliga) also confirmed that there are no plans to implement water breaks, except when necessary due to hot weather.
In American sports, such as the American Football League and the NBA, matches are divided into quarters, which gives advertisers additional time for advertisements.
