The village of Hmeimat Al-Dair in the Abu Al-Duhur area in the eastern countryside of Idlib (northwestern Syria) was severely damaged after water from the Al-Siha Dam leaked into residents’ homes and flooded hundreds of hectares of agricultural land such as wheat and barley fields.

Civil Defense teams and the Ministry of Defense worked to remove the dirt barriers that were placed in front of the Al-Siha Dam, but the heavy rains now threaten other villages.

A resident of the area told Al Jazeera Mubasher that approximately 150 homes were damaged as a result of this disaster, noting that their agricultural crops were destroyed due to the rise in water levels in the village, and the main Abu Al-Duhur road was cut off, calling on the concerned authorities to help them and restore their homes.

This citizen said that their area lacks basic capabilities such as drinking water, medicine, and bread.

Another citizen described the situation as tragic, and said that teams from the Civil Defense and the Ministry of Defense intervened to help after the waters of the Al-Siha Dam leaked. For his part, he stressed that the main road, which is the artery of the people in the region, had been cut off, adding that since 2013, they had been displaced from their homes due to the water leak.

Displaced families

Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Anas Al-Maarawi monitored the conditions of families who were displaced from their homes after they were damaged by floods in the village of Hmeimat Al-Dayer in the eastern countryside of Idlib.

Due to heavy rains, water seeped into agricultural lands, and the affected families were evacuated to a shelter center in the village.

Muhammad Hammadi from the Emergency Relief Department at the Syrian Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management says that the rise in water levels in the dam and the collapse of the berms resulted in water leaking into the village of Hmeimat Al-Dayer, causing damage to the infrastructure and agricultural crops.

It is noteworthy that the Al-Siha Dam is a huge water complex extending from Aleppo Governorate to the eastern countryside of Idlib.
