The American thinker and director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey Sachs, described the American-Israeli war on Iran as a “war of illusions” built on false estimates about the possibility of subjugating Iran by force, stressing that the absence of international support is due to the absence of any realistic path to achieve the war’s goals.
Sachs said in statements to Al Jazeera Mubasher that the current war was created by only two figures: Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump, stressing that it does not enjoy any broad popular support within the United States or Europe.
Sachs called on world leaders, including the Gulf states, to take a clear stance to stop the war, directing a direct address to Israel and the United States about the need to end military operations, stressing that their continuation will only lead to more chaos.
Regarding the political proposals put forward for the region, Sachs stressed that there is no peace without a Palestinian state, considering that the essence of the regional conflict is linked to the absence of a just solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international law, calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel in Gaza, Jerusalem and the West Bank. He believed that rejecting this solution is what fuels the spiral of conflicts in the region.
Sachs strongly criticized American policies in the Middle East, noting that what he described as the “Zionist lobby” in the United States contributed to pushing foreign policies that led to a series of wars in several countries in the region, including Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Libya, considering that the continuation of these policies hinders the chances of peace.
Regarding the war on Iran, Sachs denied the validity of the US President’s statements about achieving victory, stressing that no goals were achieved, and the situation is still a deep crisis, pointing to the continued economic tension, high energy prices, and the disruption of navigation in some vital corridors, which, according to him, reflects the failure of the war at all levels.
He stressed that ending the war is possible immediately through the withdrawal of the United States and Israel, considering that its continuation will only bring catastrophic costs to the region and the world, calling for a return to political solutions and opening the way for comprehensive regional stability.
In a separate context, Sachs commented on the assassination attempts targeting US President Donald Trump, saying that these incidents reflect a deep problem within American society related to the spread of weapons and internal division, but he ruled out that they would have a direct impact on the course of the ongoing war.
