A state of euphoria and happiness filled the Israeli media, following the announcement of the signing of the framework agreement on Friday evening, between Lebanon, Israel and the United States.
Israeli channels competed to host political and military analysts who described the agreement as “excellent,” “an important achievement,” and “positive,” as it links the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon to the success of the Lebanese army in disarming Hezbollah and dismantling its military structure.
But the most dangerous was the Israeli herald of the outbreak of civil war and a military confrontation between the Lebanese government and Hezbollah, which refuses to disarm and refuses to recognize the agreement.
In light of the Israeli media promoting the scenario of civil war in Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came out, in a recorded video speech, to confirm that Israel “will not withdraw from the security belt as long as Hezbollah is not disarmed, and as long as there is a threat to Israel,” as he put it.
Netanyahu added that the agreement allows the start of the deployment of the Lebanese army in specific areas based on the recommendation of the Israeli army, with implementation starting in two experimental areas.
Israeli plan
The Israeli Channel 13 quoted its military affairs analyst as saying that Israel is “pushing Lebanon into a civil war,” considering that a confrontation between the Lebanese government and Hezbollah “may not be bad for Israel,” and that that “was the goal from the beginning.”
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper quoted Israeli officials as saying: “The Israeli army will currently remain along the Yellow Line, and will not withdraw from Shaqif Castle, and the Lebanese residents will not return to their homes according to the agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon.”
The newspaper added that the new agreement obliges the Lebanese army once again to “dismantle the terrorist infrastructure” in the experimental areas, and if implementation is successful to Israel’s satisfaction, other areas will be added.
“A matter of time”
Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition “Israel Our Home” party, Avigdor Lieberman, claimed on Friday that the framework agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon under American sponsorship will not prevent the outbreak of a new confrontation, stressing that the next confrontation with Hezbollah is a matter of time.
Lieberman said in a blog post on the American “X” company platform: “The common interest of Israel and Lebanon is for the Lebanese government to extend its full sovereignty over all of the country’s lands, but this will not be achieved without eliminating Hezbollah.”
Israeli figures also expressed reservations about the speed of withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Channel 12 quoted the head of the Regional Council, “Mate Asher”, and the head of the Front Line Forum, Moshe Davidovich, that the Israeli army remaining on the front line is “a matter of extreme importance,” considering that the risk of the settlements being exposed to attacks will remain as long as Hezbollah maintains its presence, in the absence of an international force capable of imposing its disarmament.
Davidovich added that he did not rule out the possibility of reaching a peace agreement with Lebanon, but he stressed that the success of the agreement will not be measured by what is contained in the documents or what is happening in Washington, but rather by the extent to which actual security is achieved for the residents of the border areas.
On the other hand, the official Israeli radio said that the framework agreement paves the way for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon after the disarmament of Hezbollah, and also prepares for the conclusion of a comprehensive peace agreement with the Lebanese state after ending Iranian influence in the country.
The former head of the Israeli Military Intelligence Division (AMAN), retired General Amos Yadlin, considered that the agreement with Lebanon represents “a very important and positive achievement,” distinguishing it from the American-Iranian agreement, saying: “The understanding regarding Lebanon stipulates Israel’s withdrawal in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah, and sets a goal of reaching a peace agreement between the two sides.”
