As the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence approaches on July 4, 2026, preparations for celebrating this historic occasion have become the focus of escalating political controversy, amid disagreements over who is leading the events and their nature, and whether the national celebrations have turned into a partisan project linked to US President Donald Trump.

The New York Times reported that planning to celebrate this occasion began about a decade ago, when in 2016 Congress established a bipartisan committee called “America 250” to coordinate anniversary activities and involve various American states and communities in celebrating the 250th anniversary of independence.

But Trump’s return to the White House last year changed the course of the project, as he sought to play a greater role in the celebrations, before creating a separate organization called “Freedom 250”, to organize his own events, which led to the emergence of two parallel tracks for the celebration and a state of confusion between local officials and the public about who is actually responsible for the occasion.

Donald Trump sought to play a greater role in the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, before he created a separate organization called “Freedom 250”, to organize his own events.

According to the newspaper, the “America 250” organization, which Congress officially assigned the task, presents itself as a national project that aims to “promote patriotism and renew commitment to the principles of democracy through educational and participatory programs that unite Americans.”

The organization has launched various programs, including concerts, student competitions, community initiatives, and a project to create a time capsule that includes contributions from all US states and territories.

On the other hand, “Freedom 250”, supported by Trump, focused on huge public events, most notably the “Great American Exposition of the States” held in the National Mall in Washington, in addition to the “Freedom Trucks” project, which are mobile museums that travel around the American states to display national history.

Increasing criticism

However, this overlap between the two institutions has raised increasing criticism. Critics have pointed to the lack of transparency regarding the funding of “Freedom 250,” especially after reports that major donors were given opportunities to interact directly with Trump.

It also dismayed some members of Congress that the new organization received the largest share of federal funding allocated for the celebrations, amounting to $150 million.

The controversy escalated further when a number of prominent artists withdrew from participating in the Great American Exhibition concerts after their names were announced, stressing that they were not aware of the extent of the event’s political connection to President Trump.

At the heart of the dispute stands the “Great American Exposition of the States”, which is Trump’s most prominent project as part of the celebrations. The New York Times says that the exhibition will include more than 150 pavilions representing American states and territories, with cultural and entertainment performances and programs that address topics such as faith, health and innovation.

But the states’ participation was not uniform; Several states, most of which were led by Democratic governors, refused to officially join the exhibition. Some justified the decision with financial considerations, while others expressed concerns about the partisan nature of the event.

As for Independence Day itself, it will witness competing events that reflect the existing division. In Los Angeles, America 250 is organizing a huge concert entitled “America’s Popular Concert,” presented by actress and singer Queen Latifah, and in which a number of well-known artists will participate.

In Washington, “Freedom 250” is organizing a large fireworks display near the Washington Monument, including an air show and military displays, while Trump announced that he will personally participate in the event, describing it on social media as a “Trump rally.”

The New York Times believes that the 250th anniversary of America’s independence was supposed to constitute a unifying moment for Americans, but it turned into a new arena for political conflict and partisan polarization.

Independent celebrations

Meanwhile, other cities are preparing to hold celebrations independent of the two institutions. In New York, an international maritime show will be held featuring about 80 historical and military ships, while Philadelphia will host a free concert under the slogan “One Philadelphia: Unity Concert for America.”

US states also launched their own programs. In Virginia, huge events will be held in the historic city of Williamsburg, including drone displays, fireworks, and programs recalling the founding of the United States of America. In South Carolina, national festivals and musical performances are held, while Colorado chose to organize a long series of drone shows extending until the end of the year.

The New York Times concludes that an occasion that was supposed to constitute a unifying moment for Americans turned into a new arena for political conflict and partisan polarization. While “America 250” seeks to present the anniversary as a comprehensive national celebration, Trump is pushing through “Freedom 250” towards a model more closely linked to his political vision and national slogan.
