Brynäs recently presented their star signing Juuso Välimäki, 27.
29 hours later he is lost.
Backen has signed a new one-year contract in the NHL.
No, it’s not a nightmare.
The Brynäs supporters wake up today to the grim reality for SHL clubs when the NHL calls.
Just before one o’clock last night, Swedish time, the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes announced that Juuso Välimäki has signed a new contract with the club.
The one-year contract is worth 900,000 dollars, equivalent to 8.8 million kroner.
Strong finish in the AHL
As late as in Tuesday evening Brynäs announced that the 27-year-old Finn had signed a two-year contract.
– He has shown his potential at the very highest level in the NHL and his end of this season in the AHL also confirms his high quality, said Brynäs sporting director Johan Alcén among other things.
The skilled defenseman accounted for 20 points in 24 games in the AHL playoffs with Carolina’s farm team Chicago Wolves. Now it is clear that the strong finish will be rewarded with a new NHL contract.
Included in the Four Nations
Välimäki was drafted in the first round in 2017 and has played 271 NHL games in Calgary and Arizona/Utah. He was traded to Carolina’s organization in January and two seasons ago he was part of Finland’s squad in the star-studded Four Nations tournament.
If there are games in Europe in the 2027/2028 season, Välimäki has a valid contract with Brynäs.
