The mayor of the municipality of San Miguel Amatitlán in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico has been shot dead, local authorities said.
Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez was attacked as he left his home, La Jornada newspaper reports, citing security sources.
A criminal investigation is underway, but no arrests have yet been made, according to the state attorney general’s office, which confirmed the murder.
Drug cartels are active in the area and security forces have increased their presence after the crime, the authority said.
