Henrik Rydström is the new coach for Hammarby.
He takes over from Kalle Karlsson.
– There is an opportunity to be the coach I want to be here, says the 50-year-old.
The message that Karlsson was fired came during Friday morning.
Rydström now steps in together with Theo Olsson, who will be the new assistant coach. The contract runs until 2028.
– We are standing here because we felt we needed a change in our daily training activities and in the leadership, says sports director Mikael Hjelmberg at a press conference.
– He stands for football that falls under the framework of our game idea, for clear leadership and a statement of demands in everyday life. He has won both league and cup and has a CV of playing European football.
When the Allsvenskan has now entered a summer break, Hammarby is in fourth place, after eleven games played.
– In the short term, it will be about creating an atmosphere and mentality that I enjoy and that I know leads to success over time, more than tactical pieces, says Rydström.
“I was involved in the process”
Bajen’s new coach most recently comes from Columbus Crew in MLS, where he was fired last month.
The sporting director confirms that Rydström was one of the candidates when the choice fell on Karlsson before the season.
– Henrik was involved in the process even then. But then we landed in that Kalle Karlsson was the best option for Hammarby, says Hjelmberg.
Rydström has previously coached Sirius, Kalmar and Malmö. In MFF, he won two SM golds before he was fired in September 2025.
