The journey of the rise of South Korean brands in the automobile market began in the sixties and seventies of the last century, as it proceeded from the assembly stage to manufacturing, with a focus on low-cost economical cars.
Over the years, especially in the 1990s and beyond, the automobile industry in South Korea gradually developed and transformed from being just an emerging economy into a strong competitor in the global market, in terms of quality, design and advanced technology, leading to its entry into the luxury and electric car categories and competing with major international brands.
Huge investments in research and development, coupled with global technology partnerships, have contributed to enhancing the position of South Korean automobile companies on the global level.
Focusing on modern technologies at competitive prices also played an important role in increasing the spread of South Korean cars in various markets, especially in Europe, the Middle East and North America, and with the global trend towards electric and smart cars, Korean companies have become among the most prominent competitors in this field.

The birth of the national identity of “Kia” and “Hyundai”
Although South Korea has a relatively limited number of car companies compared to countries such as Japan, Germany and China, its global influence is very large, and this is due to its reliance on a few giant industrial groups instead of dozens of small companies, with huge investments directed towards development and technology, which enabled it to produce cars that combine advanced specifications, durability and modern technologies at competitive prices, which made Korean cars enjoy wide spread and great confidence among consumers in various countries of the world.
The image of Korean cars globally has changed significantly in recent decades, after they were previously known as a low-cost economical option widely used in taxis, and today they have become a fierce and real competitor in the luxury and technology categories.
Two Korean companies, Kia and Hyundai, have contributed greatly to strengthening South Korea’s position and making it an influential force in the global automobile market, and a symbol of its development in the fields of technology, innovation and modern technologies.

Kia… a humble beginning
The company did not start with the name Kia, nor was it initially working in the automobile industry. In 1944, it was founded in the capital, Seoul, under the name “Kyeongsung Precision Industries” by Kim Chol Ho, and in 1952 it changed its name to “Kia Industries”.
It started as a small, modest company manufacturing metals and bicycles. Over time, it expanded into the field of transportation, and later entered the world of manufacturing motorcycles, trucks, and cars.
The word “KIA” is divided into two parts: “KI” means rise, while the letter “A” stands for Asia, meaning “rise from Asia”.
The company faced a severe financial crisis in 1997, and one year later it was acquired by the Hyundai Group. Since then, the company has witnessed a major renaissance and has become a trusted global brand for millions of consumers.
Hyundai…the third largest car manufacturer in the world
In 1947, businessman Chung Ju-young founded Hyundai in the capital, Seoul. It was initially a small company working in construction. With the expansion of the country’s economy after the Korean War, the company turned to the automobile industry and established “Hyundai Motors” in 1967.
Hyundai – whose name means modernity in the South Korean language – launched the first locally designed and developed Korean car, the Hyundai Pony, in 1975, which became a symbol of the beginning of the modern Korean automobile industry, which constituted its actual launch in global markets.

It was initially known for low-priced economy cars, before expanding in the 1980s and 1990s and focusing on quality and modern technologies.
After Hyundai Motors acquired Kia in 1998, the group became the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world.
In 2008, the group launched its first luxury car under the name “Hyundai Genesis,” and in 2015 “Genesis” became an independent brand, affiliated with the Hyundai Motors Group.
An exceptional success story
The rise of South Korean cars reflects an exceptional industrial success story, moving from a minor player to a direct competitor to the global auto giants.
Through continuous development in quality, technology and innovation, it has been able to make its own mark, and become one of the most prominent influential forces that has turned the scales in this industry, with expectations of continuing this progress and strengthening its position globally in the coming years.
