The network operating company announced Cuba’s National Electricity Network collapsed at midday on Monday, cutting off power to about 10 million people, adding that it was investigating the causes nationwide.
Electricity was already cut off to nearly two-thirds of Cuba when the grid collapsed today as the country’s fuel reserves dwindle and its electrical network continues to deteriorate.
Cuba has been suffering for months from power outages lasting hours, and more recently days, due to, among other reasons, a dilapidated network and an oil blockade imposed by the United States that cut off fuel supplies to the island.
Cuba has long faced difficulties in maintaining electricity supplies during an economic crisis that has been going on for years, but the communist government has entered a period of unprecedented difficulties with increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump.
It is noteworthy that fuel has been running out throughout Cuba since last January, when the US President threatened to impose tariffs on any country that sells or supplies oil to the island.
