The coach of the Egyptian first football team, Hossam Hassan, stole the spotlight in the 2026 World Cup tournament held in the United States, not only with his technical performance inside the green rectangle, but also with a humanitarian and political stance that he launched from the heart of the American city of Atlanta, attacking what he described as “international silence and double standards” towards the human suffering experienced by the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
Hassan’s statements came during the official press conference held yesterday, Monday, in preparation for the expected confrontation between the Egyptian and Argentinian national teams in the round of 16 of the World Cup, on Tuesday evening.

The Egyptian coach strongly criticized the stark contradiction between the widespread sympathy for animal rights in Europe and America, and the shocking disregard for the killing of thousands of civilians, children and women in Palestine, stressing that what is happening in the Gaza Strip represents “a disgrace to the entire world and decision-makers.”
Hossam Hassan’s statements became the focus of widespread attention on social media platforms, as Egyptian tweeters and activists were quick to interact with them.
An Egyptian tweeter praised the great boldness shown by the Pharaohs’ technical director, and described him as a person who is “daring and not afraid” of the strict rules or restrictions usually imposed by international sports bodies. She considered his lengthy and direct speech about the tragic situation in the Gaza Strip as a document and a historical position recorded in his name.
For his part, another Egyptian activist went beyond the accounts of the Green Rectangle, considering this media appearance as “the most important press conference in the history of Egypt’s coaches, in one word, and a message that expresses every Egyptian citizen.”
Sports activist Mohamed Fares also praised the conference, considering that the Egyptian coach’s words express what he described as “wisdom and magic in the statement,” which God brought together for Hossam in his speech at the press conference.
In the Arab world, Hossam Hassan’s statements were met with wide praise, as Kuwaiti activist Nasser Al-Qarni commented, praising the position and saluting the Egyptian coach, stressing that “talking about Palestine and Gaza is a duty, as it is the central issue for all free people in the world.”
Palestinian praise and Israeli anticipation
Palestinians, the words were warmly welcomed by media and societal elites. Palestinian journalist Mahmoud Al-Amoudi said: “Captain Hossam Hassan is rising up for us for the second time,” in reference to the continuity of his advocacy positions, while Palestinian activist Khaled Safi shared the highlights of the conference as a historic position to be recorded in international forums.
Another Palestinian activist also focused on the extended impact of the word on the human conscience, noting that Hossam Hassan’s words will remain immortal in memory and will not be erased by days, stressing that their value remains constant and a matter of appreciation and respect regardless of the team’s technical path in the tournament or the outcome of the upcoming meeting with Argentina, whether it ends in victory or defeat.
On the other hand, the Hebrew media monitored the speech of the Pharaohs coach; Israeli Occupation Army Radio correspondent Jackie Haughey commented on the conference, noting that these statements come as a natural extension of Hassan’s behavior and previous positions, by raising the Palestinian flag after the match against Australia in the previous round.
Interaction outside Arab circles
The words of the Pharaohs’ technical director were not only fleeting in Arab sports and media circles. The South African sports journalist, Gary Smith, conveyed the exceptional atmosphere that prevailed in the conference hall.
He described Hassan’s speech as an enthusiastic sermon that lasted 5 minutes and rearranged priorities. The importance of the World Cup calculations diminished in light of the magnitude of the tragedy, noting that the hall erupted with warm and thunderous applause from the journalists present in appreciation of the “coach’s courage.”
International newspapers accompanied this interaction with extensive news coverage that took the conference out of its sporting context. The Spanish newspaper El País covered Hassan’s lengthy speech and pointed out that the 59-year-old coach is not only speaking as a representative of his team, but rather considers himself an expressive voice for the Arab world and Africa as a whole, highlighting his demand for football players to deliver messages of support and assistance to the Palestinian people.
For its part, Al-Monitor focused its coverage on Hassan’s description of what is happening in Gaza as “a disgrace to the entire world,” while Yahoo Sports placed the situation in a context of insistence, considering the Egyptian coach’s raising of the humanitarian situation in Gaza again as a strong message that coincides with one of the tournament’s biggest matches against the defending world champion.
The Turkish network “TRT Sport” also published a report that highlighted Hassan’s talk about “common humanity”, and quoted his emphasis that anyone who cannot feel the thousands of pains of the Palestinians loses a part of his humanity.
The Egyptian national team’s coach had dedicated the Pharaohs’ historic qualification to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, following their victory over Australia, to the Palestinian people, expressing his solidarity with them, while an activist, through his account on the Instagram platform, documented a video clip of Captain Hossam Hassan waving the Palestinian flag on the field, amid the chants of the gathered fans demanding “Freedom for Palestine.”

The Egyptian national team will meet its Argentine counterpart this evening, Tuesday, at Atlanta Stadium in the United States, in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The Egyptian national team had qualified for the round of 16 for the first time in its history, after defeating Australia on penalties (4-2), after regular time ended in a tie (1-1), in the round of 32 of the twenty-third edition of the World Cup.
