A man found a snake in a box out in the woods in Mjölby on Sunday, the police write on their website.
In the box, which was closed and had air holes, was what is believed to be a boa constrictor.
The County Administrative Board has taken care of the animal.
A similar find was made in Linköping as recently as last week, but that snake was not in a box and has not been seen since. Also last summer, loose snakes were found in southern Sweden that do not belong in the Swedish fauna.
Releasing strange snakes into the wild can be considered a violation of the Animal Welfare Act or animal cruelty, according to the police.
