Manchester City has reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign England national team midfielder Elliot Anderson, in a record deal at the club level worth $155 million, with the player officially joining the ranks of the “Citizens” after the end of his participation with the “Three Lions” team in the 2026 World Cup.

The deal represents the first major deal during the era of Italian coach Enzo Maresca, who took over the leadership of the team, succeeding Spaniard Pep Guardiola, ending an era that extended for an entire decade and witnessed great successes for the club.

Tests in the England camp

Anderson, 23 years old, underwent medical examinations in Kansas City, USA, where the England national team is staying in preparation for facing Mexico in the round of 16 of the World Cup, and his transfer procedures will be officially completed immediately upon his return to England after the end of the national team’s campaign in the tournament.

Manchester City said in an official statement on Thursday: “Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Elliot Anderson.”

He added: “His transfer will be completed upon his return to England. In the meantime, everyone at Manchester City wishes Elliott and the England national team all the best in their World Cup campaign, and we look forward to welcoming him to Manchester at the appropriate time.”

A record in City history

Press reports had previously indicated that the value of the deal could reach $173 million, making it the most expensive in the history of English football. However, the final agreement settled at $155 million, which is a record in the history of Manchester City, but it remains less than the current record in England, registered in the name of Liverpool, which paid $167 million to Newcastle United in exchange for signing Swedish striker Alexander Isak last year.

Praise from Tuchel

Anderson played all four of England’s World Cup matches as a starter, performing at remarkable levels that prompted the German “Three Lions” coach, Thomas Tuchel, to praise his potential during the tournament’s preparatory camp.

Tuchel said: “He is a high-class player. There are no more words, he is a complete player. I am happy that he has joined us, as he is a key player for us.”
