Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to hold a meeting with US President Donald Trump this week, immediately after the latter’s return from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit to be held in Turkey, in light of Israeli efforts to re-coordinate positions with Washington regarding a number of regional files.

The newspaper said that Netanyahu wants to hold the meeting as soon as possible for several reasons, most notably restoring the trust that was damaged between him and Trump following the war with Iran, in addition to presenting the latest Israeli intelligence information before the resumption of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, in an attempt to influence the American position on its files.

She added that the Israeli Prime Minister also intends to discuss the file of normalization with countries in the region, as it is one of the political and regional files that the two sides seek to advance, in addition to his belief that a quick meeting with Trump may give him political momentum before the next Israeli elections.

On the other hand, Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Israeli officials as saying that people in Trump’s circle are working to incite against Netanyahu.

“Netanyahu knows who the leader is.”

In this context, Netanyahu – in an interview with Fox News – denied the existence of a crisis in his relationship with the US President, saying: “I do not think there is a rift in the relationship with Trump,” adding that “President Trump is the leader of America and does what is in its interest, and I am the leader of Israel and I do what is in its interest.”

Trump previously told the American website Axios that Netanyahu asked him to hold a meeting at the White House, and that this meeting may take place early next week.

The US President stressed that Netanyahu knows who the leader is, noting that they enjoy very good relations.

Relations between Trump and Netanyahu have witnessed notable differences in recent months regarding the recent agreement between Washington and Tehran, as well as the escalation in Lebanon.

On the other hand, the “i24NEWS” channel correspondent reported that a number of senior Israeli officials are expected to head to Washington in the coming days and weeks, explaining that Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar will visit the United States within about a week and a half to meet with his American counterpart Marco Rubio, while arrangements are progressing for Defense Minister Israel Katz’s visit to Washington.

The reporter quoted an informed source as saying that “the military option is still on the table,” indicating that the visits of Sa’ar and Katz may be canceled if a date is set soon for a meeting between Netanyahu and Trump.
