Rescue services officials said that 14 children were killed when the roof of an educational center collapsed in the city of Lahore in eastern Pakistan on Tuesday, at a time when the authorities are paving the way for a possible investigation into the issue of neglect.
The emergency service in Punjab province stated that rescue teams found children and a 30-year-old teacher under the rubble of the private educational center.
The ages of the children who died ranged between 5 and 16 years, and most of them were under nine years old.
Police official Faisal Qumran said that 8 other children were also injured and were receiving treatment in the hospital, adding that the owner of the educational center and another person had been arrested.

For her part, Azma Bukhari, Minister of Information in the Punjab Province, said that initial reports showed that the educational center was not registered and was providing its services inside a private residential building under a dilapidated roof, and she threatened those responsible for the incident with strict legal measures, if it was proven that there was negligence or negligence.
Bukhari added that the authorities in the Punjab province had received instructions to conduct a survey of unsafe buildings before the monsoon rains, and to impose stricter rules on unregistered educational centers and private educational institutions.
For his part, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his sadness over these deaths, and called for effective security measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
