The Pakistani army announced today, Wednesday, the interception of 4 drones that it said were launched from Afghanistan, warning of retaliation against the Taliban in the latest escalation between the two countries.
This comes after the Taliban movement vowed to respond to Pakistani air strikes that targeted eastern Afghanistan this week, leaving 36 civilians and dozens wounded, it said.
The Pakistani army confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the Taliban forces “launched four improvised drones across the border in the Balochistan province.”
The Pakistani army quickly warned the Taliban of the consequences of the attack, stressing that it would receive “a response that will cost it dearly,” in an escalation that reflects the deteriorating security situation between the two countries.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan announced the killing of at least 28 civilians, most of them women and children, during Pakistani raids targeting the provinces of Paktia, Paktika and Nuristan in eastern Afghanistan on June 28.
An invitation to dialogue
In a related context, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric – during a press conference yesterday, Tuesday – expressed his concern about the recent growing violence between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He called for an immediate cessation of military actions between the two parties and a resolution of their differences through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing at the same time the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Pakistan had previously announced the implementation of military operations, which it said were based on intelligence information, in border areas, following attacks launched by militants on its territory.
Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harboring militants that it says are planning to launch attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban movement denies these accusations, saying that “insurgency is an internal Pakistani problem.”
Militants of the Balochistan Liberation Army are active in the border province of Balochistan between the two countries, demanding the secession of the region from Pakistan and granting it autonomy for the Baloch nationality.
