Today, Iran is holding talks with the mediator Qatar about the agreement with the United States.
At the same time, President Donald Trump is said to have considered resuming attacks on Iran – but chose diplomacy.
Today’s meetings in Doha will focus on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding with the United States, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei.
– These discussions will be held with the Qatari side, he said during a press conference on Tuesday.
The release of frozen Iranian assets is also to be discussed, according to Baqaei. He says Iran’s negotiating team has no immediate plans to meet the US side, despite US President Donald Trump claiming on Monday that Iran asked to meet in Doha the following day.
Spoke Lebanon
It is clear that White House peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Qatar as well. On Tuesday, they met with Qatar’s leader and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin al-Thani to discuss “the development of the talks between the United States and Iran”, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry on X.
The talks also dealt with general security and stability in the region, as well as the ceasefire between Israel and the government of Lebanon.
“The meeting (…) emphasized the importance of consolidating the ceasefire and building on it in a way that preserves Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty and stability,” writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Discussed attacks
According to sources to The Wall Street Journal, in recent days President Trump has had several conversations with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Defense Secretary Dan Caine about resuming attacks on Iran – to “finish the job,” as some of the sources describe it.
However, Trump is said to have made the decision to continue on the path of talks, the newspaper writes.
The president is also said to have said he was okay with the Iran negotiations continuing after August 18, which is the set deadline for a new nuclear energy agreement with Tehran.
