The allegation sparked widespread interaction among football fans, especially with the escalation of discussion about refereeing decisions in tournament matches, and with the circulation of pictures of the Moroccan national team as a new sporting stance on the events of the match.
Spread of the allegation
The allegation was widely spread across social media platforms, after sports and fan accounts recirculated photos attributed to the official account of the Moroccan national team on Instagram, linking them to the controversy that followed the Egyptian national team’s match against Argentina.
The photo publishers considered that the appearance of Moroccan players performing the “X” sign, in conjunction with talk of a similar gesture made by Egyptian national team coach Hossam Hassan during the match, represents a clear Arab message of solidarity with Egypt.
Some of them went on to present the pictures as evidence that “the Arab peoples have one cause,” in reference to the widespread public sympathy for the Egyptian team after the match, and the accompanying criticism of arbitration and video technology.
The truth about the pictures
By doing a reverse search and tracing the source of the photos, it turned out that the photos are correct, but they are old and were published on June 6, 2026. The photos go back to an official photo session that took place before the start of the World Cup, within a context related to the message “No to racism,” and not within a comment on a specific match or a specific arbitration decision.
This means that the photos preceded the arbitration controversy to which the circulating accounts linked them, and that they do not represent a new publication issued after the Egyptian national team match.
Hossam Hassan reference
The last minutes of the confrontation between the Egyptian team and its Argentine counterpart in the World Cup final, witnessed dramatic events, which were not limited to the result, which ended with Argentina winning by three goals to two, but also extended to include a major arbitration crisis.
In the midst of the tension that prevailed in the final moments of the match, the lenses captured the Egyptian national team’s coach, Hossam Hassan, clearly crossing his arms in the shape of the letter X, immediately after the referee showed the yellow card to his face.
The Egyptian Football Association called for an investigation to be opened into the performance of the refereeing team that officiated against Egypt and Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, after expressing its dissatisfaction with the decisions that affected the outcome of the match.
The Egyptian team lost to Argentina with a score of (3-2), after giving up a two-goal lead without a response, leaving the tournament amid a state of anger over some refereeing decisions during the match.
