The EU Parliament says yes to a temporary extension of the internet giants’ ability to voluntarily search for child abuse material.
But first, a special conciliation process may be required.
A last-ditch attempt to stop the approval was voted down on Thursday when the stop side only got 276 members – some 80 fewer than required.
A small number of changes in the legal text were nevertheless approved, which means that negotiations with EU member states are likely to be required before the extension can be nailed down.
In practice, however, the decision means a continuation of the old rules that expired last spring.
The question of how the search for abuse material should be conducted has led to heated debate for years, with accusations of too much transparency into private chats and emails.
