Riot scenes have played out on the streets of France in connection with football in the past.
You don’t want that to be repeated.
A special security effort is being prepared for the World Cup quarter-finals.
In the aftermath of the World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco in 2022, more than 266 people were arrested in connection with riots, of which a total of 167 arrests took place in Paris, reports AS.
After this year’s Champions League final, when Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal on penalties, similar – but worse – scenes of chaos were repeated. According to The Athletic, almost 900 people were arrested after the riots that followed the final and several hundred people were injured around the country.
Now that it’s time for a repeat of France-Morocco, in the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup, France wants to do everything to avoid another chaos.
Will use drones
The match has been classified as a high-risk event and, according to Le Parisién, special security measures have been introduced in Paris. Among other things, the police will use drones to monitor the city.
France’s police authority warned even before the World Cup also of a risk of “unrest throughout the country” in connection with the championship, according to Le Monde.
The newspaper further writes that the country’s interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, wants to see that the necessary measures are taken to “prevent, counter and minimize” disturbances. Among other things, the sale and possession of fireworks and similar goods may be prohibited.
