The crisis between Kylian Mbappe and Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla has not subsided. After her government rejected her controversial statements, the senator returned with a new message in which she attacked the captain of the French national team and demanded an apology.
Today, Tuesday, Celeste Amarilla published an open letter to Kylian Mbappe, after the great controversy sparked by her previous statements following the confrontation between France and Paraguay in the round of 16 of the World Cup, which were considered racist and offensive towards the captain of the French national team.

Amarilla stressed in her letter that the dispute between her and Mbappé was personal and not with France, stressing her great respect for the country in which she received her education and whose language she spoke, and that her criticisms were not directed at the French people or the French state.
But at the same time, the senator returned to attacking Mbappe, accusing him of showing arrogance and contempt for the Paraguayan national team players during the match. She also criticized his behavior after the match, especially towards her country’s national team goalkeeper.
Amarilla: I wrote under the influence of anger
In an attempt to clarify her position, Amarilla said that she regretted the posts she published after the match, which included phrases that raised accusations of racism, explaining that she wrote them under the influence of anger before realizing that she had used speech that she personally suffered from because of her mixed origins, so she decided to delete them.
However, the senator rejected Mbappe’s description of her as unworthy of the position she holds, considering that this statement represents a personal attack against her as a woman and an elected politician, stressing that her position came through the ballot boxes and that she represents the citizens who elected her.
Amarilla demanded that the French national team captain retract his statements and apologize to her, threatening to resort to justice on charges of gender-based violence if he did not respond to her demand.
Statements that sparked accusations of racism
The crisis broke out after France’s victory over Paraguay with an unanswered goal, scored by Mbappe from a penalty kick, after Amarilla published statements on the “X” platform in which she described the player in terms that were considered racist, including questioning his French identity because of his Cameroonian origins.
It also directed sharp criticism at the player, considering that he showed arrogance during the confrontation, statements that sparked a widespread wave of condemnation in France.
Mbappé responded to the senator through his official account, describing her statements as an expression of racism, stressing that he would not allow the spread of hate speech. He also defended the Paraguayan players, noting that these statements overshadowed their efforts and progress in the tournament.
Macron supports Mbappe
French President Emmanuel Macron entered the crisis line, declaring his support for Mbappe and rejecting the racist rhetoric, as he wrote on his account on the “X” platform: “Another goal for Kylian Mbappe. Against racism this time. When words are stained, our values answer: dignity, respect, and brotherhood.”
For its part, the Paraguayan government was quick to disavow the senator’s statements, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in an official statement its rejection of these statements, considering that they conflict with the principles of respect for human dignity and peaceful coexistence.
The Ministry stressed that Amarilla’s statements represent her personal position as a member of the legislative authority, and do not reflect the position of the government or the Paraguayan people, stressing respect for the relations between Paraguay and France.
