A video clip that spread widely around the world sparked great controversy in technical circles and on social media platforms, after it showed a human robot in a company in Indonesia performing combative movements in which it appeared as if it was attacking people inside a work environment.

The footage, which was widely circulated across platforms, spread very quickly, leading some users to believe there was a serious flaw in artificial intelligence systems or even a robotic rebellion.

However, investigations and subsequent technical reports made it clear that the video does not document a real incident, but rather refers to a pre-planned experimental demonstration, aimed at displaying the robot’s movement and balance capabilities in a test environment, and not uncontrolled autonomous behavior.

Combat movements within a technical test

According to what the video showed, the robot made rapid movements that included raising its arms in a manner similar to martial arts, in addition to sudden lunges forward, which gave the false visual impression that it was an attack.

However, technical sources confirm that these movements are part of a dynamic test aimed at measuring the robot’s ability to balance and respond while executing complex movements.

Technical explanation: direct control or pre-programming

Experts believe that what appeared in the video falls within one of two common technical models in human robots. The first is direct human control (teleoperation), where an operator controls the robot instantaneously through precise commands in real time, and this method is often used in experimental demonstrations.

The second is pre-programmed movements, where a series of pre-stored movements is played to test balance and motor dynamics without any intervention or decision from an independent artificial intelligence system.

Why did the scene seem aggressive?

Despite the purely technical nature of the movements, several factors contributed to its incorrect interpretation, most notably the high speed of execution, the formal similarity of some positions to martial arts movements, in addition to publishing the video without an explanatory context.

The nature of short content on platforms such as TikTok and “shorts” clips on YouTube also contributed to strengthening this impression, as clips are often circulated without background information.

Rapid spread and misleading narratives

The video has been recirculated as an example of how robots can get out of control, a narrative often repeated when clips showing robots in unusual movements go viral.

However, technical reports, including what was published by the American website Interesting Engineering, made it clear that the scene was part of a laboratory experiment aimed at testing the robot’s capabilities, and not an actual glitch or accident.

From a scientific standpoint, studies confirm that current robots do not have independent awareness or intention, but rather operate through pre-programmed control algorithms and sensors, and therefore any behavior that seems unexpected is usually due to motor tests, programming errors, or balance challenges, and not to autonomous decisions.
