Portugal’s WC is over.

It is also Roberto Martinez, 52, time as national team captain.

After the match, he confirms that he is resigning.

Roberto Martinez’s contract expired after the World Cup and it was rumored before the World Cup that it would be the last thing he did as national team captain for Portugal.

After the 0–1 exit against Spain in the round of 16, he confirmed it.

– Was the decision already made before the WC? No, I don’t think so. I came to Portugal to win the World Cup, and I think there is no point in continuing when we failed to do so. The confederation management and the chairman now have the opportunity to choose a new confederation captain. The chairman has always supported my work, but my contract expires today. There is really not much more to say, he says at the press conference, according to Record.

Heavy in the big championships

Martinez took over as national team captain in 2023 but his time in Portugal has not been a particularly happy story.

Portugal did indeed win the Nations League in 2025, but it has been more difficult in the EC and WC. This year, the exit was already in the round of 16, and EC 2024 was over in the quarter-finals.

According to A Bola Jorge Jesus, 71, will take over as the new national team captain.

He was most recently the coach of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi club Al-Nassr.
