President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa on Wednesday in connection with the NATO summit in Turkey, the White House announced.
The meeting with Zelenskyi is expected to be about the war in Ukraine, while the meeting with al-Sharaa is expected to revolve around Syria’s role in the Middle East.
On X, Zelensky writes that US determination is crucial to ending the war in Ukraine. He adds that talks with the US will be held in Ankara at the summit.
An anonymous senior US official says it is in Trump’s interest to end the war in Ukraine.
What the talks with Ahmad al-Sharaa will be about is unclear. But Trump has said Syria could play a bigger role in the US and Israel’s fight against the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon.
al-Sharaa, for his part, has said that he is happy to maintain a good relationship with Lebanon.
