The European Parliament will vote on a temporary extension of the measures against child abuse that critics call “chat control”.
A first vote will be held at lunchtime on Tuesday. If the answer is yes, a decisive vote will then take place already on Thursday.
The decision comes after the EU member states made a new attempt last week to say yes to the extension, in anticipation of being able to agree on more permanent rules.
This spring, the EU Parliament voted no to the extension, which gives the big internet giants the opportunity to voluntarily search for abuse material on social media. That a swing is now underway is explained by the legal uncertainty that has resulted from the no.
However, the proposal is controversial and is accused by netizens of leading to undue surveillance of emails and chats.
