“I think we can leave with our heads held high,” Gil said after the match. “Paraguay gave their best on the pitch. I think we could have done much better without that penalty kick. We controlled the game perfectly – we didn’t even let them pass us by one pass. As for the penalty decision, I think it was the right decision.”
Gil also spoke about what happened between him and France striker Kylian Mbappe after the match.
The goalkeeper said: “I extended my hand to congratulate him, but he did not pay attention to me. France is the most prominent candidate to win the World Cup.”
He added in statements: “This is football. I extended my hand to congratulate him, but he did not pay attention to me. I got emotional at that moment, but I calmed down after that.”
Gil (26 years old) won the Man of the Match award for his country against France in the round of 16 after he presented a distinguished performance in which he succeeded in stopping many French attempts, and kept the score tied for 70 minutes before France took the lead from a penalty kick.
Gil plays for the Argentinian club San Lorenzo, and he also succeeded in leading Paraguay to qualify for the round of 32 at the expense of Germany on penalties.
