Tunisia’s national team and 3 losses in the 2026 World Cup

The adventure of changing the coach in the middle of the tournament failed to save Tunisia’s World Cup campaign, as veteran French coach Renard was unable to achieve what Sabri Lamouchi was unable to achieve, after the 3-1 loss to the Netherlands resulted in the Tunisian team’s miserable exit, without achieving any victory.

The North African team had arrived at the global forum full of optimism, after keeping a clean sheet throughout the qualifying campaign, but its campaign in the tournament quickly turned from disappointment to a state of chaos, leaving behind many questions about the team’s future.

Tunisia conceded 12 goals in the group stage, under the expanded tournament system that includes 48 teams, which is a negative record in the history of the World Cup, surpassing the previous record recorded by Costa Rica (11 goals) in the 2022 edition when the tournament included 32 teams.

The heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden in the opening match revealed clear defensive fragility, which led to Lamouchi’s dismissal after only one match, but the change did not succeed in stopping the deterioration.

Tunisia then suffered a harsh 4-0 defeat against Japan, which Renard said made him feel “ashamed,” before concluding its campaign with a loss to the Netherlands in the final round of Group Six, leaving the tournament with three defeats.
