Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, 51, is not allowed to play chess for a year.
The International Chess Federation has suspended him.
Last October, the American chess player Daniel Naroditsky died.
Then Russian Vladimir Kramnik was accusedwho was world champion from 2000–2006, for causing Naroditsky’s death. Naroditsky felt bad because he was one of several players who – without any evidence – were accused of cheating by Kramnik.
Following the death, the International Chess Federation, Fide, investigated Vladimir Kramnik for bullying Naroditsky and other chess players online.
Kramnik’s punishment
Fide’s ethics and disciplinary committee has now concluded that Kramnik’s behavior violated several ethical and disciplinary rules, Fide writes on its homepage. Among other things, rules that deal with cyberbullying and psychological harassment.
Kramnik’s suspension is two years long, but the second year is only conditional with a probationary period of three years. This means that the actual suspension will be one year long without new offences.
Kramnik, who stopped competing at the highest level in 2019, must also carry out twelve months of unpaid work “for the benefit of the chess community”.
Therefore, Naroditsky died
The medical report after Naroditsky’s death came in January. He died of a heart rhythm disorder linked to the inflammatory disease sarcoidosis.
Methamphetamine and kratom were listed as contributing factors, but the levels found in Naroditsky’s body were not determined to be toxic or lethal in themselves. The death was classified as an accident.
