French President Emmanuel Macron wants to raise the country's birth rate. The picture was taken earlier this week.

More parental leave will increase birth rates, is the hope in France. From July 1, the country introduces extra time off, which new parents can share.

Until now, new mothers have been able to take just under four months off for a child, while fathers have had 28 days. With the new rules, one to two months are added, which the parents are free to share.

In 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron presented a plan to raise the birth rate in the country. Last year, for the first time since the end of World War II, fewer children were born than people died, according to the country’s statistics authority.

The new rules also apply to adoptive parents.
