The brilliance of Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil against Germany was not just a coincidence. Rather, it can be considered the culmination of years of sacrifice given the tragic and harsh circumstances he went through in his private life.
Khil (26 years old) became a popular hero in Paraguay after he saved many dangerous chances against Germany in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, and the matter did not stop there as he prevented the “Mansheft” from scoring two penalty kicks, thus contributing very significantly to his country’s national team reaching the round of 16.

After Paraguay’s first match in the current edition of the World Cup, against the United States, Khil’s wife, Melissa Avalos, revealed the financial sacrifices they had to make to cover the expenses of treating their son Lautaro when he was born 4 years ago.
Khayl had his son, Lautaro, who was born with health problems at a time when he was taking his first steps as a professional player for Paraguay’s San Lorenzo. He did not have a lot of money, so he was forced to sell many of his personal possessions in order to treat him.
Avalos wrote on her Instagram account, “When Lauti was born, we had nothing. Orlando was selling clothes for the club he was playing for at the time to cover expenses. Our son fought for his life and his father was always there. He sold everything. He sold the youth national team shirt that he could not keep as a memory. He sold his clothes, his shoes. He literally sold everything.”
She added, “Our grief was so great that what we are experiencing today we asked God through prayer and crying, and He answered us. It was not easy and nothing will ever be easy, but with love and sacrifice anything is possible. I hope the whole world knows the big heart you have and the desire you have to continue to grow. Your son and I love you and are proud of you.”
From midfielder to goalkeeper
Khil, who is 199 centimeters tall, did not imagine a qualitative leap of this magnitude in his career in a short time. At the beginning of 2024, he moved from Paraguay’s San Lorenzo to Argentine San Lorenzo, and spent a full year with the reserve team before becoming the first team’s first-choice goalkeeper under the leadership of coach Damian Ayudi in 2025.
What is noteworthy about Khil is that the beginning of his football career was not as a goalkeeper, but rather he held the midfield position in the “13 de June” team in his country, specifically between the years 2012 and 2013.
Steel character and psychological toughness
Khil did not pay attention to the criticism he received even before he played his first match in the World Cup, the most prominent of which was from Chilavert.
The historic Paraguayan goalkeeper said, “He does not talk to his teammates. He plays like a mute. The goalkeeper cannot play silently. He must direct his defence.”
Khel did not hide his joy and extreme pride after his great contribution to qualifying for the round of 16 in the World Cup, saying, “Thanks to God, I was able to save two penalty kicks. This was important for qualifying. We eliminated a former champion. I dedicate this achievement to the entire Paraguayan people, and especially to my nephew, who is going through a difficult time and is in the hospital.”
Khil represented the Paraguayan national team for the first time in September 2025 at the invitation of Argentine coach Gustavo Alvaro, and since that time he played 10 matches, conceding 12 goals and saving them in 4 matches, according to data from the famous “Transfer Market” website.
