Emil Forsberg has done his part in the Swedish men’s national football team.
The 34-year-old announces that his national team career is over.

The former national team star was also asked what would happen if national team captain Graham Potter were to call.
– Then I say no. I have not announced this to the national team yet, but will do so after the WC, says Emil Forsberg.
“Extremely grateful”
It was not a difficult decision, he explains.
– As calmly as possible. I am incredibly happy and proud of everything I have experienced in the national team. I am just extremely grateful. All the players I’ve played with and the community we’ve had is something I’ll never forget.
The star, who today plays in the MLS club New York Red Bulls, was a key player in Blue Yellow for a long time and led the national team to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2018.
“Should have scored more goals”
In 2021, he won the Guldbollen, the prize for Sweden’s best male soccer player.
There were 92 international matches and 21 goals in the national team jersey.
– I should have scored a few more (goals). In the last years, from 2020 to 2023, I put in an extra gear. I should have done it earlier. But it is what it is. I am satisfied, says Forsberg with a smile.
