Britain is headed for its hottest June weather in 50 years.
– London is boiling, says UN chief António Guterres.
“It’s a dangerous time for older people,” warns Age UK.
A red heat warning has been issued for southern England, the Midlands and south Wales on Wednesday.
Dozens of schools have been forced to close and the authorities are flagging major disruptions in public transport.
The heat record from June 1976, when the thermometer measured 35.6 degrees, also appears to be in smoke.
– It is the same heat that affects France and other parts of Europe right now, says Klart’s meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.
– According to my colleagues in England, they can reach 39 degrees on Wednesday and also Thursday, which is absolutely incredible, says Klart’s meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.
Protects the fish
It will be worst for the elderly, reports say Sky News.
Those aged 75 or over accounted for nine out of ten heat-related deaths in England last summer.
“It is a dangerous time for the elderly,” warns the elderly organization Age UK.
It’s the same for the fishermen.
To protect fish in Lake Bala in Wales, the amount of water will be doubled. The hope is that it will reduce the fishermen’s stress.
Same harmful root cause
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is himself in London at a climate conference where he stated that the British capital is “boiling”.
He also warned of “climate chaos accelerating before our eyes” and said the world is facing two major crises: the climate crisis and the energy crisis.
– At first glance, these crises may appear to be two different problems, but they have the same harmful root cause: fossil fuels.
On Tuesday evening, weather stations around Reading, England show 37 degrees, but official figures are still awaited from the Met Office, which is the UK’s equivalent of the SMHI.
