Explosion in skyscraper in Madrid

Something has exploded on one of the upper floors of a 45-story building in Madrid.

Videos from the scene show heavy smoke.

– Hundreds of people have been evacuated, says a person who left the building to El País.

The skyscraper is Spain’s second tallest.

According to El Mundo, the fire started on the 24th floor. According to El País in a technology room.

The building must have been evacuated.

– We employees got down via the stairs, says one who works in the scraper to El Mundo.

– We left our belongings in the offices because everything went so fast, another tells El País.

The evacuees gather in the area around the skyscraper where an extensive security effort has been put in place.

– We are outside the building. There are a lot of police here, according to people on the spot.

There are no reports of injuries, according to Spanish police.

The skyscraper is part of the “Cuatro torres” complex – the four towers – in the financial district in the northern parts of the capital.

– We have left our belongings in the offices because everything has gone very quickly, says a person who was evacuated to El País.

The cause of the explosion is still unclear.

The fire is said to be under control.
