Jordan is already eliminated in the group stage in their first World Cup.
Algeria’s 2–1 victory was the nail in the coffin for the newcomer.
The result further increased Sweden’s chances of becoming one of the best group threes.
Algeria held the baton from the time referee Slavko Vinčić kicked off the match against Jordan, until it was called off.
Despite that, it was Jordan who took the lead when Nizar Al Rashdan’s shot found the back of the net after just over half an hour. But Algeria was rewarded for its toil.
Nadir Benbouali headed in the equalizer from a corner, before Ahmed Nadhir Benbouali completed the turnaround – also from a corner. The match ended 2–1 to Algeria, and the result confirms Jordan’s elimination from the World Cup.
Sweden’s chances are increasing
Algeria’s turnaround means they now have a good chance of reaching the play-offs as one of the top eight group threes.
According to VG’s statistical model Sweden’s chances have also increased by a few percentage points thanks to the North African turnaround. On Tuesday morning, the number ticked up to a 94.3 percent probability of reaching the playoffs. Sweden is currently the best of all three, with 3 points and 0 in goal difference.
At the time of writing, Blågult will most likely face France in the round of 16. But with one game left in the group stage, a lot can change. Sweden and Japan meet on Friday night in the final group stage match.
