Right-wing candidate – and Trump favorite – Abelardo de la Espriella has declared himself the winner of Colombia’s presidential election, which is supported by the preliminary vote count.
At the same time, election opponent Ivan Cepeda says he wants to wait for the final result, reports Reuters.
The election has been very smooth. When 99.9 percent of the votes were counted, de la Espriella had voter support of 49.7 percent – which, according to the AFP news agency, is unassailable for the leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda, who stands at 48.7 percent.
Cepeda says he recognizes the preliminary vote count but wants to wait for a review of the election results, which could take several days. His campaign organization wants the results from around 33,000 ballot boxes to be examined.
The National Electoral Council of the country has not yet officially announced a winner.
