Park Sung-Jae, former Minister of Justice of South Korea, in court on Monday.

South Korea’s former Justice Minister Park Sung-Jae is sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in imposing martial law in the country in 2024.

Park Sung-Jae, according to prosecutors, held a meeting with Justice Department officials after the declaration of martial law and checked prison capacity in case authorities arrested government critics.

– Because of the defendant’s actions, the country was almost faced with a situation where the people’s fundamental rights and the fundamental order of liberal democracy could have been violated, says the president of the court on Monday.

Former President Yoon Suk-Yeol declared martial law in December 2024. The state of emergency lasted for about six hours.

Yoon Suk-Yeol has since been convicted of leading a rebellion and is in custody while he appeals his life sentence.
