Qatar announces the death of 13 workers and the injury of 66 in the explosion of a gas factory in Ras Laffan news

Today, Monday, the Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, announced the details of the accident that occurred at the “Barzan” gas plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, confirming the death of 13 workers and the injury of 66 others.

Al-Kaabi said – during a press conference held in Doha today, Monday – that the explosion and fire occurred at exactly 10:30 pm yesterday, Sunday, at the facility operated by Qatar Energy for Liquefied Natural Gas with the aim of meeting the local demand for natural gas.

He stressed that what happened was an accident and not an act of sabotage or hostility, and pointed out that the factory had been out of work since last December to make necessary repairs, and it had only been restarted two days ago.

Comprehensive investigation

Qatari Minister Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi said that a full and comprehensive investigation has begun to determine the exact reasons that led to this explosion, with Qatar Energy committed to providing full support to all those affected by this tragedy.

Al-Kaabi offered condolences to the families of the deceased, who were workers of Indian and Pakistani nationalities, noting that the injured were of Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Guinean, Tanzanian, Nigerian and Nepalese nationalities. He confirmed that all the injured are receiving the necessary medical care, and that their conditions are stable and that there are no life-threatening injuries among them.

The Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs said that the incident will in no way affect Qatar’s exports of liquefied natural gas, and that other export facilities, Ras Laffan Port, or logistical operations were not affected by this fire.

Al-Kaabi praised the efforts of the emergency response teams of Qatar Energy and the Qatar Civil Defense Forces, which were able to completely control the fire at dawn on Monday.

In the same context, the Qatari Ministry of Interior said that the competent security services began field procedures immediately after the accident occurred, in coordination with emergency response teams.

The Ministry confirmed – in an official statement – the implementation of the approved plans to comb the site by completing search and rescue operations in the vicinity of the accident to ensure the safety of everyone, in addition to transporting the injured to receive the necessary medical care.

She indicated that the competent authorities are currently continuing to complete their technical and legal procedures to determine the circumstances of the accident and determine its precise causes, stressing at the same time that no leakage resulting from the accident has been detected that poses a threat to the safety of individuals or the surrounding environment.
