France swelters under record-breaking temperatures – A week in France

It’s hot here in France. The country’s weather service expects the current heatwave to be “widespread, prolonged and intense”, with temperatures in some areas potentially topping 40°C. Paris will still hold its annual Fête de la Musique celebrations on Sunday, but local officials in other regions have cancelled events.

The three-day G7 summit hosted by France wrapped up this past Wednesday, but US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron were also treated to a lavish dinner at the Palace of Versailles. For more than 400 years, the opulent residence has welcomed many foreign dignitaries and heads of state.

Paris Saint-Germain football star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial in a rape case here in France after an appeals court said there were sufficient evidence to move forward. He is accused of raping a 24-year-old woman in his home in March 2023, allegations he denies.

Department store BHV is breaking up with Chinese-founded retailer Shein, after new management came in to take over the beleaguered Parisian icon.

Plus, the Pont Neuf Cavern – an artwork by French street artist JR, sometimes referred to as the French Banksy – is now open to visitors in Paris. The installation transforms Paris’s oldest bridge into an artificial cavern, through a visual, auditory and olfactory experience.
