Now he can miss the match against Sweden – after a bizarre incident at the Netherlands’ training.
– We’ll see if he can play, says national team captain Ronald Koeman.
On Thursday, midfielder Quinten Timber was injured during a training session with the Netherlands.
That alone was a big concern for national team captain Ronald Koeman.
Now it turns out that the situation is even worse than the Netherlands feared. Because at the press conference before the match against Sweden, Koeman revealed that Timber’s injury has created an unfortunate chain reaction.
“It turned out to be de Jong”
Timber was injured in a serious collision with not only one but several teammates at training. He suffered a concussion, but also unfortunately fell over a very important player in the impact.
– It was unclear who he collided with, but it turned out to be de Jong. He tripped and fell into Frenkie, says Koeman.
The journalists laughed
The national team captain would not say exactly what injury Frenkie de Jong sustained in the collision, but hinted that it was in an extra sensitive spot by declaring that the hit to De Jong was “below the belt”, prompting laughter in the press room.
– Frenkie trained today but we’ll see how he reacts – if he can play.
As the Dutch journalists continued to ask curious questions about Frenkie de Jong, Koeman finally had enough, saying he had already said all that needed to be said on the matter.
De Jong’s absence would be a tough blow for the Netherlands. The 29-year-old plays for Barcelona and is, together with Virgil van Dijk, the team’s biggest star.
