One person was killed and dozens of others were injured as a result of a two-train collision in the Bedford area, north of the capital, London, on Friday evening, according to British Transport Police.
The East of England Ambulance Service said that one person was killed and 33 others were injured, including 11 seriously, in a major accident that occurred about 90 kilometers north of the British capital.
The two East Midlands Railway trains were heading south to St Pancras station in London when they collided outside the town of Bedford just after 5pm local time, according to information circulated on railway tracking websites.
Emergency services deployed a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance helicopter and a critical incident team from the East of England Ambulance Service.
Pictures and videos posted on social media showed dozens of people, some wearing bandages, but many unharmed, standing and sitting between emergency vehicles parked on a road parallel to the train tracks.
According to the viewer, both trains remained on the tracks, but a passenger said that one of the trains had derailed.
One of the passengers reported that the collision caused him to be thrown forward, and then he saw other passengers with broken bones and bloody injuries.
Passenger Pete Knapp told the local Press Association news agency: “At some point, we were thrown into the opposite seat and then I saw smoke.”
He added, “People were groaning and screaming, and they were in a state of shock and amazement.”
The passenger continued, “I saw many people unable to speak and suffering from broken legs,” stressing that some people appeared to be suffering from “serious and perhaps life-threatening injuries.”
Train collisions are relatively rare in Britain.
In September 2023, people were injured after two trains collided on the Aviemore Railway in Scotland.
In August 2020, a train heading from Aberdeen to Glasgow deviated from its track, killing three people in northeastern Scotland, after a landslide caused by heavy rains.
