For the first time, researchers were able to document and photograph the Cozumel dwarf fox, one of the most mysterious and rare canid species.
It was thought for a long time that it may have become extinct or disappeared from nature, but the recent discovery, published in the journal Neotropical Biology and Conservation, is the first direct photographic documentation of this creature in decades, and the first modern visual evidence of its survival.
This rare animal, known scientifically as “Eurocion SP”, lives exclusively on the island of Cozumel, located in the Caribbean Sea off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and is genetically closer to the gray fox widespread in North and Central America, but it is noticeably smaller in size as a result of long geographical isolation.
Accidental discovery
Details of the discovery date back to the morning of September 14, 2023, when scattered reports began to spread on social media about the appearance of a stray fox near one of the coastal roads on the island.
Based on these reports, researcher Rafael Chacón, director of the Parks and Museums Foundation of Cozumel, led an urgent field search that ended with the discovery of an adult male fox at around six in the morning on the island’s eastern coastal road.
The team was able to photograph the animal for the first time scientifically, before transporting it for a short period of observation, and then re-releasing it in a protected natural environment away from roads, to ensure its safety.
Absent from the eyes
Before this discovery, the only evidence of the existence of this fox was limited to semi-fossilized remains found in archaeological sites dating back to the Mayan civilization, in addition to very rare sightings that have not been scientifically documented since 2001.
Also, no genetic studies or complete taxonomic description of this animal have been conducted so far, which makes its scientific status uncertain, although researchers believe that it represents a clear case of isolated evolution within the island.
The Cozumel fox is a classic example of the phenomenon of “island dwarfism,” where geographic isolation and resource scarcity cause species to become smaller than their mainland relatives.
According to studies, the size of this fox does not exceed 60 to 80% of the size of the continental gray fox, which indicates a process that extended for thousands of years within the isolation of the island, perhaps between 5 thousand and 13 thousand years at least.
An island that produces unique animals
The Cozumel fox is not the only case on the island, as the island is home to a rare group of dwarf mammals, including the dwarf raccoon and the dwarf cootie.
Scientists are puzzled by the reason for the existence of this unique group of dwarf animals, which makes the island an exceptional natural laboratory for studying evolution in isolated environments.
Despite its rediscovery, the fox’s critical condition remains, as scientists consider it highly threatened with extinction. Due to the deterioration of natural habitats, urban expansion in the south of the island, and the scarcity of scientific data on its numbers.
The researchers point out that the lack of systematic surveys makes assessing its true status very difficult, but it is scientifically classified as a species with the highest priority for protection.
The researchers believe that this discovery does not merely represent a re-documentation of a rare animal, but rather a scientific opportunity to save this rare fox.
